Sorry for the not so good picture quality, but I was interested in knowing what these markings on the left side of my M1 Carbine were. It seems to say A A X in the top right and A A R in bottom left. The Auto Ordinance carbine has failures constantly and I have given up and it is now a nice wall piece in my office. The USGI carbine shoots great and I love it. TL;DR Get a USGI carbine. Arsenal rebuilds tend to be more of a mixmaster of everything. If it's got a bayonet lug, you can pretty much bet it's an arsenal rebuild. The "U" on this one (from my guess) appears to be a rebuild mark, not an original factory mark (which should definitely be in the sling channel). The rebuild marks are to be on the left side and between the hand-grip and sling channel. So you're thinking the second one is a birch replacement stock? New M1 Carbine Problems I recently bought a 1944 Inland carbine, and it’s got an obvious problem with the recoil spring. Before I fired it, it seemed fine, but upon inserting a loaded magazine, it became clear it was not strong enough to strip and chamber a round from the magazine. The stock as shown in the pictures has no arsenal rebuild markings. There are no import marks. Overall, this rifle remains in 99% condition plus. I have never seen such perfect wood on a Garand. Several years ago the CMP auctioned a batch of these mint, unissued Harrington and Richardson M1 Garand Rifles.
